Door, Window, Stair was based upon the Russian movie “Stalker.” Stalker explored elements of convulusion, traversability, and transparency both in the characters and environment itself.

Door, Window, Stair

The material palette contributed to my ability to emphasize the spatial concepts associated with doors, windows, and stairs.

Doors-wood, stairs-plaster, and glass-windows. The solidity of stairs as to where they sit in space versus the semi-permeable nature of doors and windows coincided directly with water.

Water acts as both a medium of reflection and refraction—meaning that its reflection of the soul may often experience distortion.

By allowing the plaster’s natural texture and movement to become revealed during casting, I was able to expose this discontinuity.

Within the movie, water was often used as a threshold, allowing for a transition in the themes of the movie.

Door, Window, Stair acted as an exploration of this concept, in which the innate material and spatial qualities of water were utilized to emphasize abstracted ideas of circulation.
